BMW E39
BMW E39 — The Iconic Fourth Generation of the 5 Series
Produced between 1995 and 2004, the BMW E39 represents the fourth generation of the legendary 5 Series executive range. Initially launched as a sedan, the Touring (station wagon) variant followed in 1996. While the sedan was succeeded by the E60 in 2003, Touring models continued production until May 2004.
The E39 marked a significant leap in engineering:
-
Extensive use of aluminium chassis components, especially in the front suspension.
-
First 5 Series to offer a four-cylinder diesel engine.
-
Adoption of rack-and-pinion steering for four- and six-cylinder models, a first for the 5 Series in large volumes.
-
Unlike its predecessor (E34) and successor (E60), the E39 was not available with all-wheel drive.
The pinnacle of the lineup was the E39 M5 sedan, introduced in 1998. Powered by a 4.9 L DOHC V8 engine (302 cu in), it became the first M5 to feature a V8, delivering thrilling performance and cementing its place as a true driver’s car.
