BMW E38
The BMW Generation E38 is the third generation of the BMW 7 Series luxury cars and was produced from 1994 until 2001. The E38 replaced the E32 7 Series and was produced with petrol and turbo-diesel straight-six and V8 engines, along with a petrol V12 flagship model. Three wheelbase lengths were available — short (i), long (iL) and Limousine (L7).
The E38 was the first car available with curtain airbags. It was also the first European car to offer satellite navigation[1] and the first BMW to offer an in-built television. The E38 was the first 7 Series to be available with a diesel engine and the last to be available with a manual transmission.
Installation Guide
Removing the Front Cover
-
Release the cross-shaped clips: Turn the cross-shaped locking clips a quarter-turn using thin needle-nose pliers to release them from their slots.
-
Unclip the housing: Unfasten the top and bottom clips to completely release and remove the front cover.
Removing the Rear Cover
-
Remove the screws: Unscrew the 8 screws located on the face of the cluster.
-
Release the socket clips: Disengage the plastic clips surrounding the three sockets (White, Blue, and Black).
-
Remove the backing: Pull the rear cover straight up and lift it out of place.
Removing the Pointers (WARNING: The gauge motors are highly sensitive; extreme care is required)
-
Secure the motor shaft: Clamp the motor shaft directly beneath the pointer using thin blue flush cutters (pliers). Crucial: Grip the shaft firmly. Avoid moving or severing the spring underneath the pointer, and do not touch the ultra-fine motor wires.
-
Extract the pointer: Pull the pointer straight up while maintaining a solid grip on the shaft. You should hear a squeaking/creaking sound as the pointer releases from the shaft pin.
Note: Repeat this exact process for the Temperature, Fuel, Speedometer, and RPM pointers.
The Fuel Consumption (MPG/LKM) pointer is an exception and can be pulled off normally without clamping.
LED Customization
-
Desolder and replace LEDs: Desolder the factory LEDs and weld the new white or yellow LEDs provided in the package into place.
Faceplate Installation
-
Swap the gauge faces: Peel off the old background and install your new custom starship/modern faceplate.
Reassembling the Backing
-
Secure the rear cover: Reinstall the rear cover and tighten the screws back into place.
Calibrating and Reinstalling the Pointers
-
Pre-position for calibration: Place the pointer slightly before the "Zero" mark to ensure proper gauge calibration.
-
Maintain a 1mm clearance: Before pressing the pointer down onto the shaft, place a 1mm thick plastic spacer/shim underneath it. This prevents the pointer from pressing too deep and rubbing against the new faceplate.
-
The 1mm Gap Rule: A clear 1mm gap must be maintained. If you accidentally press the pointer too deep, do not attempt to yank or pull it up by hand—even a 1mm manual pull will damage the sensitive motor. You must repeat the removal process by clamping the shaft with the cutters and pulling it off safely.
Final Touches & Assembly
-
Color the needles (Optional): You can color the pointers red using a permanent red ink marker.
-
Final Lock: Fasten the 8 main screws and snap the front cover securely back into place.
